Transform Your Self and Your Practice with the World’s Most Comprehensive Approach to Psychotherapy

Come join us in fostering the first generation of Integral Psychotherapists. Together we’ll change the culture of psychotherapy by introducing the field to the most cutting-edge, comprehensive, and holistic approach to psychotherapy yet developed – one that is not only valid now, but one that is flexible and adaptable to our rapidly changing world and our ever-increasing understanding of the human mind and body.

Integral Theory is one of the most complete frameworks for understanding human experience ever devised, meshing the psychological, spiritual, scientific, cultural, and social into an integrated whole. Its elegance and extraordinary explanatory power have made it one of the world’s most popular and studied philosophical theories. The Integral model also gives us clear ways to incorporate all the major approaches to psychotherapy in clinical practice, including:

  • Psychodynamic
  • Interpersonal
  • Cognitive-Behavioral
  • Somatic
  • Multicultural
  • Feminist
  • Existential
  • Transpersonal

The Professional Certification in Integral Psychotherapy (CIT) Program has been created to by one of the pioneers in the field, Mark Forman PhD, to be the first complete training on how to practically apply Integral concepts in clinical practice. It is intended for licensed mental health professionals as well as graduate students and interns with clinical experience. It is for those looking to deepen and expand their understanding of the human psyche and how psychotherapy contributes to human well-being and psychological and spiritual maturation.

The CIT program addresses every facet of Integral Theory in depth and in applied form, pointing directly to the realities of clinical work and the various presenting issues and populations that we see. The learning in the program will include the cognitive, but will also heavily emphasize the personal and experiential. The goal of the program is not only to foster the development of Integral Therapists who understand and can apply the theory in their work, but who also can embody the deeper dimensions of what it means to be “Integral.”

Once completed, you will receive your certificate as a Certified Integral Psychotherapist and be listed as a part of our website directory of Integral Psychotherapists according to your practice location.

Mark Forman_Tight_Version_2 Mark Forman, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist and the Clinical Director of Life Design Centre, an innovative psychotherapy studio dedicated to changing the lives of individuals, couples, children, and families. His text— A Guide to Integral Psychotherapy:  Complexity, Integration, and Spirituality in Practice — is one of the seminal works in the field. He is also currently co-editing his second text which applies Integral principles to diversity concerns, entitled Integral Approaches to Diversity Dynamics: Exploring the Maturation of Diversity Theory and Practice. It will be published in 2014.

Dr. Forman has over a decade’s experience teaching Integral Theory at the graduate level and mentoring therapists and therapists-in-training. He is also the Co-Founder and Lead Organizer of the Integral Theory Conference, the world’s largest academic conference devoted to Integral theory and its application. Dr. Forman is currently in private practice in Marin County and Los Angeles, California, where in addition to seeing adolescents, adults, couples, and families, he often sees other therapists, healers, coaches, and those exploring deeper psychospiritual growth. Dr. Forman is a long-term practitioner of yoga and meditation and is known as a passionate, incisive, and clear communicator.

MODULE ONE »Personalization and Integration
Ongoing Throughout Year

This module will serve to initiate participants into the CIT program as well as help them deepen their learning throughout the year. Participants will begin this module in January with an individual consultation with Dr. Forman that focuses on their goals, strengths, and interests as therapists. There will be initial readings as well as online communications with fellow participants in the course prior to the first in-person meeting.

Following the in-person intensive in February, this module will continue throughout the year with online peer discussions, readings, as well as monthly facilitated group-supervision calls. Participants will be asked to offer cases for discussion. The central focus of this module will be allowing participants to integrate the material and personalize an approach to Integral Psychotherapy that is tailored to their own specializations and populations.

MODULE TWO »Four Quadrant Being and Relating
February 7-9, 2014: San Francisco Bay Area

The Four Quadrant model is the central element in all of Integral Theory. When we understand it, we are able to approach the whole of a client’s life experience with clarity, openness, compassion, and understanding. In this module, participants will learn how to assess clients using a Four Quadrant framework and how to apply Four Quadrant knowing in psychotherapy and in the therapeutic relationship. We will work not only in a cognitive way, but practice how to see “sense” or intuit the Four Quadrants in real time with clients.

All in-person intensives will include experiential and peer-counseling exercises in order to ground and embody the material.

MODULE THREE »Stages of Development: Fostering Complexity, Nurturing Maturity
May 9-11, 2014: Los Angeles Area

Integral Theory recognizes the centrality of stages of development, from the earliest childhood stages to most expansive stages of transpersonal development which may occur later in life. By understanding development, we are much more able to apply the right interventions and ideas at the right time in therapy.

In this module, we will learn to recognize the cues and indicators of client development – developmental assessment – as well as how to apply developmentally appropriate interventions. Participants will be introduced to a variety of  conceptual tools and analogies that have been created specifically by Dr. Forman to help others understand this fascinating but sometimes difficult topic and its practical implications. We will focus on what we need as therapists to “support” and what we need to “challenge” with clients at each stage. We will also focus a great deal on the complex relationship between psychopathology and identity development – all the ways in which growth in identity does not guarantee or presuppose mental health, the absence of trauma, personality disorders, or the absence of addictive or compulsive behavior.

Built into the cost of the program, participants will take a developmental assessment with Pacific Integral – lead by Terri O’Fallon, PhD – who are at the cutting-edge of research into identity development. The results of this assessment are entirely confidential. Participants will engage in a consultation about their results with Pacific Integral’s highly experienced facilitators. This component of the program is intended to give participants another route to learn and understand developmental models, as well as a clearer sense of their own strengths and assets as well as where they need to go next in terms of their practice and growth. We will also build upon O’Fallon’s StAGES theory of development in our training.

MODULE FOUR »Spirituality and Trauma: The Heights and Depths of the Psyche
July 25-27, 2014: San Francisco Bay Area

In the first part of this module we will explore a number of concepts relating to spirituality and spiritual state experience in practice: including ascending and descending spirituality, spiritual bypass, psychedelics, and the pre-trans fallacy. We will also talk about how to assess the intensity of spiritual states, and how to address the disruptive as well as growth-catalyzing impact that spiritual states have on clients.

In the second part of this module, we will explore the reality of traumatic experience and the ways that shapes and impacts the psyche – referencing our own experiences as well as pertinent case material. We will then explore the various ways to recognize and treat trauma, focusing on the concepts of reworking trauma as well as practicing disidentification from traumatic bodily feelings and cognitions.

MODULE FIVE »Gender, Diversity, and Sexuality: Know the Other, Know the Self
October, 17-19, 2014: Los Angeles Area

In this module, we will focus on learning to expand our compassionate embrace and clinical abilities to include the enormous diversity present in our world. We will engage in exercises that highlight the diversity in our own lives, and begin to give ourselves touch points to the diversity outside of us. We will focus on the strengths of postmodern approaches to diversity, while also highlighting their weaknesses, pointing a way to a deeper embrace of both sameness and difference that we can bring to our work with clients. This module is focused primarily on understanding types – cultural/ethnic and psychosexual – that give such shape to our own and our client’s lives.
